One Dead, Kenyatta Farm Seized in Kenya Cost-Of-Living Protest

At least one person has been shot dead during a violent clash between police and protesters, Capital FM reports. The man was reportedly shot dead near Patels Flat in Kondele where youths were pelting police with stones before they opened fire. The clash started when police tried to block youths from marching to the main town from the bus station.

A group stormed Raila Odinga's gas plant - East Africa Spectre Limited - in Nairobi hours after a similar invasion at the Kenyatta family land in Northlands. In both invasions, there was no police presence or intervention. The invasion occurred as Odinga led demonstrations in Kawangware where he vowed to continue pushing for the reduction of the high cost of living.

A mosque and a church were set ablaze in Kibra on March 27 night in the aftermath of anti-government protests mobilized by opposition leader, Odinga. The fighting between two rival gangs escalated after a series of rallies in the slum addressed by opposition leaders on the second day of mass demonstrations against the high cost of living and a victory Odinga claims was stolen from him in 2022's election.

Knife-wielding gangs in Nairobi's informal settlement Kibra and Mathare attacked several journalists who covered the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition protests. In the brazen attack by the gangs, they stole the scribes' equipment and their mobile phones among other valuables.

The Media Council of Kenya has spoken out against attacks on journalists during the Azimio la Umoja demonstrations, saying that the acts threaten the freedom of the press. Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has expressed "deep concern" and has urged all stakeholders "to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation".

Meanwhile, the High Court declined to stop the demonstrations, following an application by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who argued that the protests had caused massive disruptions with businesses affected.
