EAC Major General In DR Congo Quits Amid Safety Concerns

The East Africa Community Regional Force Commander Major general Jeff Nyagah has announced that he is quitting the command of the force, Kenneth Kazibwe writes for Nile Post.

The Kenyan commander who was deloyed in DR Congo, cited safety reasons, before jetting back to Nairobi in Kenya.

DR Congo has seen a flareup of conflict in the eastern region, where thousands of human rights abuses are being committed against civilians by armed militants.

Bintou Keita, the UN Secretary-General's special representative and head of the UN Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo, noted the recent declaration of a "state of siege" in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, where violence by armed groups has been among the worst in the country.
