Sudan's Warring Factions Trade Blame for Ceasefire Violations

The warring Sudan Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) both issued statements on May 24, 2023, accusing the other of violating the latest short-term ceasefire agreement, Radio Dabanga reports. The Jeddah agreement on a seven-day ceasefire and humanitarian arrangements, and co-facilitated by the United States and Saudi Arabia, was signed by the SAF and RSF on Saturday May 20, and went into effect on Monday night (May 22).

On Tuesday, Khartoum saw warplanes fly over the city and some artillery fire, but the city remained relatively calm, Deutsche Welle reported.

The country has been torn by violence for over a month now, after the leaders of the two powerful groups - the army led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo - began fighting for control of the country. All previous ceasefires have been violated and more than one million Sudanese have been forced from their homes by the fighting. Thousands have been killed.

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. announced U.S.$245 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan. "With this funding, our humanitarian partners can respond to the new needs arising from the current conflict, which has displaced approximately 840,000 people within the country and forced another 250,000 to flee since April 15," a press statement from Blinken said.
