Ethiopia Looks at Boosting Citizens' Social Protection Systems

A two-day high-level national social protection conference kicked off on May 23, 2023 under the theme "Social Protection for Nation Building in Ethiopia".

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen said that the government is committed to work closely with partners to ensure social protection system for vulnerable citizens in areas affected by conflict and drought.

Social protection systems of a country boosts human capital and among others, help individuals and families, especially the poor and vulnerable, cope with crises. It also assists people in finding employment and invests in health and education for children, as well as protects the elderly in communities.

The impact of the two-year war that began in November 2020 between Ethiopia and the Tigray region, is still being felt in the country, after the signing of a peace deal in South Africa in November 2022.

World Bank representative Ousmane Dione said that the implementation of social protection programmes in Ethiopia "plays a vital role to sustaining peace and stability as well as consolidating national unity".
