Former Mozambican Finance Minister Extradited to U.S.

Former Mozambique Finance Minister Manuel Chang has been extradited to the United States of America to face fraud and corruption charges, the South African government website reports.

Chang is expected to stand trial in New York for his alleged role in the $2 billion loan scheme meant to boost the country's maritime economy.

South Africa's Constitutional Court blocked an attempt by Chang to stop his extradition to the U.S. in May 2023. He faces charges relating to a U.S.$2 billion sovereign debt scandal and the plunder of Mozambican resources, wrote Andre Van Wyk for AllAfrica in May 2023.

Chang was arrested in South Africa in December 2018, while in-transit at OR International Airport, on his way to Dubai.
