South Africa Looks to China for New BRICS Summit Host - Report

A Cabinet meeting to be held on Wednesday June 7, 2023 will see a proposal for South Africa to co-chair the BRICS Summit with China, in China, the Daily Maverick reports. At this stage, the summit is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg in August.

South Africa's need for an alternative venue for the summit is seen as a means of solving Pretoria's quandary about Russian President Vladimir Putin entering the country to attend the summit.

Sources told Daily Maverick that the legal opinion sought by the BRICS-appointed technical team and presented to the interministerial committee (IMC) headed by Deputy President Paul Mashatile gave an adverse finding about Putin attending the summit.

An international warrant of arrest has been issued for Putin, who was granted diplomatic immunity for the event - along with all the participants of the summit. Earlier remote attendance was considered to ensure Putin's in-person presence. However, South Africa's stance on Russia's war on Ukraine and its balance of international law may necessitate alternating hosting of the meeting in order to avoid the legal implications of not adhering to the Rome Statute.
