Egypt's Al Ahly Sets Record in African Champions League

Egyptian giants Al Ahly were crowned CAF Champions League winners for a record extending 11th time after edging out Morocco's Wydad Athletic Club 3-2 on aggregate.

They came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against The Moroccans in Sunday night's second leg tie, to reclaim the title they lost to the same opponents last season. It was a typical feisty North African derby, with chances few, but the battle immense especially in midfield.

In the second half, Ahly showed their intention by going full attacking, Ahmed Abdelkader and Mohamed Magdy Afsha coming in for Marwan Attia and Hussein Elshahat who had been closely marked out during the game.

The Egyptians would have doubled their tally in added time when Abdelkader won the ball behind the defense, but from a tight angle couldn't beat Wydad keeper Youssef El Motie who pulled a brilliant double block.

Despite pressure from Wydad with some nerve wrecking set pieces and drop balls, Ahly managed to see off the result and reclaim their title.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly secured a place at the FIFA Club World Cup following their dramatic capture of the 2022/23 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title.
