Mozambique, U.S. Bolster Ties for Security and Economic Growth

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi to recognise his efforts in promoting women's roles in security, the signing of the 2019 Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation, and the fight against violent extremist groups in northern Mozambique.

Austin also announced that the U.S. and Mozambique have signed a new U.S.$500 million compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, to develop infrastructure in Mozambique's Zambezia Province, including a vital bridge across the Licungo River.

President Nyusi expressed gratitude for the support and reaffirmed Mozambique's commitment to combat terrorism and improve maritime domain awareness. He also invited the U.S. to conduct military-to-military training and welcomed U.S. Navy vessels to make port visits to Mozambique.

The newly-established Mozambique Connectivity and Coastal Resilience Compact is anticipated to bring about positive change in the lives of 57 million Mozambicans, by fostering sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
