'Hero's Send-off' For Kenyan Star Athlete Kelvin Kiptum

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has described the 24-year-old as a national hero who "deserves to be honoured in death as he was in life".

Kelvin Kiptum, 24, and his Rwandan coach Garvais Hakizimana died instantly when their vehicle was involved in an accident on Sunday night. He died less than a week after World Athletics officially recognized his record achievement at the Chicago Marathon in October 2023, where he made history by becoming the first man to complete a marathon in under two hours.

President William Ruto has led the Kenyan Cabinet in observing a moment of silence in honour of world marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum. Homage was also paid to Kiptum’s coach Gervais Hakizimana who perished alongside him.
