African Debt Crisis Needs a Bold New Approach - Expert

Between 2019 and 2022, 25 African governments allocated more resources to servicing their total debts than to the health of their citizens, writes Danny Bradlow, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship in Pretoria. The International Monetary Fund, he said, has estimated that over half the low income countries on the continent were either "potentially or actually experiencing difficulties paying their debts". He therefore suggests they advocate more aggressively for their own interests, noting that this year offers some "good opportunities to promote a more effective approach to African debt".
