No News is Bad News for Zimbabwean Activist Itai Dzamara
Human rights group Amnesty International has accused the Zimbabwean government of obstructing efforts to uncover the fate of pro-democracy activist and journalist Itai Dzamara, who disappeared nine years ago. Dzamara, last seen on March 9, 2015 after being forcibly taken by unidentified individuals in Harare's Glen View suburb, remains unaccounted for. This is despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government pledging to investigate the case when it assumed office in 2017.
Amnesty International is urging the establishment of an independent, judge-led Commission of Inquiry to scrutinize the circumstances of Dzamara's abduction.
The organization says that Dzamara's case is one among many in Zimbabwe's history of unaddressed abductions and enforced disappearances that demand investigation and, if evidence permits, prosecution in fair trials.
