Out of Touch? South Africa's Energy Plans Criticised

The Green Connection, an environmental advocacy group, has criticized Africa Energy Indaba for being "elitist". They believe the high cost of tickets excludes the public, and the focus is on profit rather than renewable energy and solutions to the electricity crisis.

The group also criticized the government's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for including too much fossil fuel and not enough renewable energy, and its push for Karpowership, a floating power plant solution they believe is environmentally harmful and financially risky.

The Green Connection is suing the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), the energy regulator, for granting Karpowership licenses without proper environmental consideration. The case is scheduled for a court hearing in June 2024.
