Polarized Views, Misinformation Cloud South Africa's Elections

A recent report by the Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change (CABC) highlights the polarized and skeptical online discourse surrounding South Africa's upcoming 2024 elections. Analyzing over 350,000 mentions from mid to late April, the report identifies widespread distrust in the government's service delivery and accusations that political parties prioritize votes over genuine change.

Controversies include the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) new campaign, allegations of forgery within the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, and debates over former President Jacob Zuma's candidacy. The impartiality of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is questioned, particularly following its meeting with the American Embassy. Mis- and disinformation campaigns, including claims of electoral manipulation and manipulated images targeting political figures, further complicate the electoral landscape.
