Global Call for Better Maternal Care on Fistula Day

The World Health Organization reports that Obstetric Fistula is a preventable but devastating injury that affects up to two million girls and women on a global scale with about 100,000 new cases occurring annually.

This preventable childbirth injury, caused by obstructed labour, leads to constant incontinence, social stigma, and severe health complications. The persistence of this condition results from a lack of quality maternal health care such as family planning and emergency obstetric care at the time of pregnancy, mostly affecting marginalized populations, especially in remote poor areas.

Despite gaining international attention since the UN's first International Day to End Obstetric Fistula in 2013, more efforts are needed to prevent, treat, and eliminate this condition, ensuring no woman suffers from this preventable and treatable injury.
