Is President Hichilema Gearing Up To Change Zambia Constitution?

President Hakainde Hichilema recently shocked many observers when he made a series of off-the-cuff remarks on the need for constitutional reforms during an address to the country's parliament. The President said until a reform takes place to address "oversights," some gaps can "lead us to a situation where we could have no general election for eight years".

His comments drew condemnations from many stakeholders in the country, including former president Edgar Lungu who described the statement as "reckless" and urged Zambians to "stop this apparent dictator from tampering with our Republican constitution".

President Hichilema's remarks were apparently directed at different audiences, writes Sishuwa Sishuwa, a Zambian historian and Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. "He likely wished to prepare the minds of Zambians that constitutional reform is coming ...it was also a warning that he is performing a major U-turn", Sishuwa wrote..
