Africa Oil Week Begins With Appeals to Invest, 'Vampire' Protest

Environmental activists took to the streets of Sandton and Cape Town in South Africa, calling for a boycott of Africa Energy Week, aka Africa Oil Week, in Cape Town this week.

After the Cape Town horror-themed protestBush Radio's Renato van Schalkwyk spoke with activist Lisa Makaula who said the government needs to shift its focus toward renewable energy investments.

South Africa's Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe delivered the keynote address at the conference opening, appealing to delegates to "continue investing in the development of oil and gas", and later told Groundup that NGOs "block development and hide behind protecting the environment".

Extinction Rebellion Cape Town and The Green Connection protested against Africa Oil Week outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The protesters came dressed as vampires and chanted: "Fossil fuel sucks, fossil fuel kills" and "Africa needs renewables". Placards also read "Gwede Mantashe sucks", GroundUp reported.
