Prize-Winning Jailed Eritrean Journo's Daughter Keeps Fighting

Journalist Dawit Isaak, who has been imprisoned without trial in Eritrean prisons for the past 23 years, has won a Swedish human rights prize, the Edelstam Prize for his efforts to promote freedom of expression.

Isaak, who holds dual Eritrean-Swedish citizenship, received the award for "exceptional courage". Bethlehem Isaak, Isaak's daughter, will receive the prize on his behalf at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on 19th November 2024.

Isaak was one of the founders of Setit, Eritrea's first independent newspaper, which published letters calling for democratic reforms in 2001. He was among about two dozen individuals, including senior cabinet ministers, members of parliament, and independent journalists in a government purge. Eritrea's government has not provided any information on his whereabouts or health, and many of the other prisoners are presumed dead.

Eritrea has not held elections since independence, and President Isaias Afwerki has been in power for nearly 31 years.
