UN Charts Path for Global Land, Drought Action #COP16

Over 200 countries have committed to prioritize land restoration and drought resilience as part of their policy goals at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The main achievements include progress toward a global drought regime, which is expected to be finalized at COP17 in 2026, as well as a commitment of over $12 billion to combat desertification, especially in vulnerable regions.

Several agreements were reached, including the formation of caucuses for Indigenous Peoples and local communities, strengthened science-policy collaboration, and increased participation by the private sector. Drought resilience initiatives such as the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership and the International Drought Resilience Observatory (IDRO) aim to address the challenges posed by land degradation and drought.

The conference marked a turning point in raising global awareness and fostering action against the interconnected threats of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.
