Cholera Spikes in Sudan’s White Nile, 1,000s of Children at Risk

More than 2,700 cases of cholera have been reported in White Nile State since the beginning of 2025, claiming least 65 lives, including 10 children. UNICEF, with the Federal Ministry of Health and humanitarian partners, is intensifying efforts to curb the spread of the disease, particularly in overcrowded displacement sites and camps housing 650,000 internally displaced people and 400,000 refugees.

A power outage disrupted water supplies, forcing families to rely on untreated water from the White Nile River, exacerbating the crisis. UNICEF is providing fuel and water treatment chemicals to restore safe drinking water for 150,000 people, distributing hygiene supplies, and launching a cholera vaccination campaign targeting over 1 million people.

Since the outbreak was declared in August 2024, over 55,000 cases and 1,500 deaths have been reported across 12 states.
