Maternal and newborn deaths remain a preventable crisis across Africa and other low-income regions, with sub-Saharan Africa bearing the heaviest burden. Despite progress since 2000, most deaths occur due to gaps in quality care, skilled health workers, and well-equipped facilities. As the world marks International Women's Day on March 8, 2026, under the theme of "Give To Gain" and Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," experts say that sustained investment, strong policies, and collaborative action can dramatically reduce maternal and newborn deaths, writes allAfrica's Melody Chironda.
