'Witchcraft' Panic Leaves Dozens Killed by Mobs in Mozambique

At least 60 people have been lynched after hysteria involving rumours about the "shrinking" and "stealing" of male genitalia. Eyewitnesses said once an individual is accused, a mob quickly forms and kills the victim.

The violence began in mid-April in Cabo Delgado province and has since spread to other regions of the country. The authorities have made hundreds of arrests. Individuals claiming to be victims of the alleged attacks were taken to hospitals and police stations for examination, and medical professionals determined the claims to be untrue.

The chaos has prompted senior officials from the ruling Frelimo party, including President Daniel Chapo, to issue public appeals for calm.
