U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced sanctions against Tanzanian Police Force Senior Assistant Commissioner Faustine Jackson Mafwele, citing "credible information" linking him to gross human rights violations.
Tanzania's immigration authorities reportedly detained Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire, and an occupation was organised in Nairobi to call for their release. Mwangi and Atuhaire had planned to attend the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

Speaking about his ordeal for the first time on Monday, Mwangi said he was arrested on May 19, after acts of intimidation by Tanzanian security forces.
