New Census Highlights Struggles of Mozambican Farmers

Only 18% of the country's 36 million hectares of arable land is currently under cultivation, according to a new Agriculture and Livestock census. The report highlights the nation's vast agricultural potential and the challenges its farming families face regarding crop production.

''This means that the future of national economic transformation will continue to be deeply linked to our ability to transform subsistence agriculture into commercial, integrated, resilient, and agro-industrialized farming," said Salim Vala, the Minister of Planning and Development, at the report's launch.

The survey also reveals a stark contrast between farmer support in Mozambique and neighboring countries.
