African countries pose a variety of threats and opportunities to the United States, and engaging with them is not optional. But policymakers and analysts have regularly undervalued Africa's importance to US national security and economic interests. Harris, former Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council.
