Suspended Gauteng Mental Health Director, Dr Makgabo Manamela has refused to accept responsibility for the decision to move mentally ill patients from Life Esidimeni to unlicensed NGOs. She says she was merely implementing a departmental decision which was aimed at cutting costs. Manamela was forced to take the stand at the Life Esidimeni hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg yesterday, after being sub-poena'd and failing in her application for a postponement. The arbitrator, Justice Dikgang Moseneke, will Tuesday continue to question her about her role in the transfer of patients, which resulted in 143 deaths
