2015 Africa Cup of Nations Finals

Aristide Bance of Burkina Faso.

English:Burkina Faso are back at the Africa Cup of Nations after a first round exit at the tournament staged in Angola in 2010. The Stallions reached their first continental finals in 1978 as Upper Volta, but also did not progress past the first round. They had to wait another 18 years for their next showing, in 1996, and were regular qualifiers up until 2006 when they failed to book a place in Egypt. Their best finish was fourth-place achieved in 1998 when they hosted the event, losing 2-0 to eventual champions Egypt in the semifinals. The current side is coached by Portuguese national Paulo Duarte, who played for the lies of Boavista and Maritimo in his homeland, but is in his first job as an international coach. Strikers Moumouni Dagano, who plays for Al-Sailiya in Qatar, and Wilfried Sanou of German side Cologne, are the dangermen up front, while Charles Kaboré of Olympique Marseille and Jonathan Pitroipa from Rennes are key players in midfield. Burkina Faso eased into the 2012 finals in a three-team pool that also included Gambia and Namibia, after Mauritinia withdrew before qualification began. They picked up three wins and a draw from their four matches, though there was controversy over the use of Cameroon-born Herve Zengue, who was handed citizenship through marriage to a Burkinabe. Namibia are currently appealing the six points they lost against Burkina Faso, a matter that is still sitting with CAF.

2012 Africa Cup of Nations Finals

Daouda Diakate of Burkina Faso dives in a vain bid to stop Sudan from scoring.

Saloman Kalou of Cote d'Ivoire and Mohamed Koffi of Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea during the 2012 eliminators.

This is their eighth appearance at the final phase of the African Cup of Nations since 1978.

The 'Stallions' as they are fondly known have only taken part ones in the last three editions. But with a 2.8 billion frs CFA injection in the team this time, they can proof to be a difficult side to play against and might even replicate their 1998 exploit where they finished in fourth place.

Under the leadership of coach Paulo Duarte and strikers like Moumoumi Dagano from Al-Sailiya in Qatar, Wilfred Sanou from FC Cologne in Germany upfront, Charles Kabore of Marsaille and Jonathan Pitriopa of Rennes, 'The Stallions' may very well prove a threat.

They had started their preparation earlier despite the fact there was an appeal pending against then from Namibia against the fielding of Cameroonian born Herve Zengue. Fifa ruled in their favour.
