Mozambique: Car Linked To Reporter's Murder Found In South Africa

Maputo — Mozambique's Attorney General Joaquim Madeira said on Thursday that suspects in last year's murder of leading journalist Carlos Cardoso included Portuguese nationals and Mozambicans, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported on Thursday.

His statement followed a brief announcement on Wednesday from Interior Minister Almerino Manhenje, who released the first official information about the investigation since Cardoso was killed in November. Cardoso, editor of the independent news sheet 'Metical', was gunned down on the street in Maputo as he left the newsroom. He was reportedly investigating a fraud scam at a Mozambican bank in which government officials were allegedly involved.

Madeira made the disclosure to journalists covering the opening of the 2001 judicial year. He declined to say how many people were being questioned by his office, but said the suspects were arrested in a neighbouring country. Police sources said one of the two cars used in the murder had been located in South Africa, the news agency reported. Police officials from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Britain helped in the murder investigation, he said.
