United Nations — A top United Nations relief official today said the UN was appealing for $10.7 million to help Mozambique deal with the recent floods.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Maputo by Ross Mountain, the UN Assistant Emergency Relief Coordinator, who was in Mozambique to assess the contingency plan to evacuate people living in areas with rising water levels.
The sum represents about one third of the Mozambican Government's request for $30 million towards flood-related assistance.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, some 50,000 Mozambicans are still at risk from rising water levels, and have been urged by the Government to move to safer areas. Food stocks have been pre- positioned in strategic locations for distribution, but additional boats for distribution operations are urgently needed, the Office said.
