Mozambique: Japan Donates To Demining In Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique — The Japanese government has donated 89 million yen (roughly 846,000 US dollars) toward de- mining in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza.

The project covers the districts of Mabalane, Chibuto, Xai- Xai and Chicualacuala.

Under the Aid for Community Projects, Japanese ambassador, Yoshihiro Nose Monday presented the money to the National Demining Institute (IND).

"With the financial support that the Japanese government gives to Mozambique, we are convinced that this country shares in a practical manner the development strategies adopted by the Mozambican government", the director of the IND, Artur Verissimo said.

The IND's perception is that the faster the demining process the lesser the prevalence of accident hotspots, and "we'll be establishing basic conditions for the use of land in the various activities of the country's socio-economic development towards the eradication of absolute poverty".

Japan previously donated one million dollars for the demining of areas surrounding the Massingir dam in Gaza.
