Lusaka — The Mozambican government is happy that the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) had started regulating the opening of flood gates at Kariba Dam.

Mozambican High Commissioner to Zambia Cristofa Jamo yesterday said unlike in the past, ZRA now looks at the consequences of opening the spillway gates before letting out the water. "The response has been very encouraging in terms of Zambian authorities in connection with the Zambezi River Authority," he said.

"They are regulating the opening of flood gates. Kariba Dam is rising but now they also look at the problem of not letting the Zambezi to burst." High Commissioner Jamo said the uncontrolled opening of gates previously led to the bursting of the Zambezi River in Mozambique.

He also thanked the rest of the international community for what he said "favourable response" to the flood crisis in Mozambique.
