Mozambique: Policemen Nabbed for Complicity

Maputo, Mozambique — Four members of the Mozambican police are under arrest on charges of complicity in armed robberies and other crimes, press reports said at the weekend.

The four, in handcuffs, were presented at a Maputo police parade watched by General police commander Pascoal Ronda.

Explaining the public presentation, Interior ministry spokesperson Nataniel Macamo said it would discourage any further attempts at acts that discredit the police force.

Among the four is Octavio Macuvele, who is accused of taking part in an armed robbery in which received 15 million meticais (about 850 US dollars) for his connivance.

David Magagula, another of the accused, is said to have joined a group that broke into a shop with firearms, and stole goods estimated at 76 million meticais.

A third accused, Rafael Wahia of the Criminal Investigation Department, is accused of involvement with drug dealers.

The fourth, Sergeant Carlos Bata, is accused of leaking information about police activities to criminal gangs.

The four deny the accusations.
