Mozambique: EU Assists Mozambican Flood Victims

Brussels, Belgium — The European Union (EU) has granted 2 million Euros (1 euro = 0.88 dollars) to Mozambique as emergency humanitarian assistance for flood victims.

According to a statement issued by the EU in Brussels Thursday, floods have affected 320,000 people in the Tete, Zambezi, Manica, and Sofala provinces.

The donation to be managed by EU humanitarian organisations, would be used to purchase logistics for the distribution of food, medicines as well as blankets and make-shift shelters for the flood victims.

The money will also be used to implement water purification programmes and for the distribution of seeds and agricultural tools to the victims.

Sources in Brussels said from 1999 to 2000, Mozambique has received 120 million Euros from the EU in humanitarian assistance.

The EU considers Mozambique as a key partner in the Southern African Development Community.

In November 2000, President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique visited Brussels and held talks with Romano Prodi, chairman of the European Commission.
