Mozambique: Mozambican Airlines Raises Air Fares

Maputo, Mozambique — The state-owned Mozambican airline, LAM, has raised its domestic, regional and inter-continental fares, effective since last Tuesday.

LAM slapped a 10 per cent increase on its domestic and regional tariffs.

Consequently, a return economic class ticket from Maputo to northern Nampula for instance, now costs 9.796 million meticais (about 495 US dollars).

A ticket from Maputo to Lisbon (currently the only inter-continental route flown by LAM) has gone up by 15 per cent.

LAM blames the fare hike on increases in fuel prices. When fuel prices were revised in March jet fuel went up by 19.1 per cent to 5,530.40 meticais.

Another factor that may have contributed to the new air fare increase is the devaluation of the metical (the local currency) against the US dollar.
