Mozambique: Telkom 'Can Succeed in Maputo'

Kenya's Telkom, who lost the first leg match of the Africa women's club championships to Academia Maputo last weekend, still have a chance in the return leg in Mozambique on June 6.

Or Kenya Basketball Federation officials, coaches and fans who watched the first leg tie in Nairobi last Saturday think so.

The Kenyans, who suffered a 64-81 defeat at the hands of their Mozambican opponent at Nyayo National Stadium, failed to click with some critics citing over-confidence.

KBF secretary Henry Shihemi believes a little discipline in defence and improvement on speed would carry the day for the Kenyan girls in Maputo.

"It was simply a bad day for Telkom and fans should expect anything during the return leg match in Mozambique," a confident Shihemi said.

National team and Kencom Lioness coach Ronnie Owino believes the Kenyans can win the game if they control the boards and deny Academica the fast breaks from which the Mozambicans scored most points.

He also feels the team should change their defensive tactics to stop Academica's three-point shots.

"The battle is still on and Telkom can easily beat their opponents," Owino, a former Kenyan international, said.

KBF administrative assistant Pamela Ogoye says the Kenyan have enough time to correct the mistakes which the coach noticed in the first leg and should not therefore have a problem beating their opponents way.

She particularly wants the team to improve on speed and basic dribbling skills which saw the teams make several turn overs under the slightest of the pressure.

She also wants the players to be themselves and avoid necessary panic as was witnessed on the Saturday match.

During the Saturday match, star guard Wilkister Akinyi Oduor who was voted Kenya's MVP was at sea failing to click the entire game.

The usually explosive guard who goes for the brakes at will and nails three pointers at any opportunity had not scored a single point in the entire first half and ended up with unusual eight points in total.

Interestingly, coach Thomas Olumbo did not rest Wilkister despite the luck lustre performance which is pointer that he does not believe in his entire squad.
