Mozambique: France Gives Mozambique 5.6 Million Dollars to Repair Roads

Maputo, Mozambique — The French government on Wednesday made available 6.5 million euros (about 5.6 million US dollars) for the repair of roads in Maputo province.

The governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Adriano Maleiane, and the Maputo representative of the French Development Agency, Odile Deserts signed the agreement for the grant, which will facilitate the rehabilitation of a nine-kilometre stretch of the trunk north-south highway in the Incomati flood plain in Manhica district.

A 24-kilometre stretch of the road linking the towns of Magude and Xinavane will also be rehabilitated.

Massive floods on the Incomati in February last year severely damaged these roads.

Maleiane praised the French gesture, stressing that upgrading those roads is important for providing easier access to areas of agricultural production.

Deserts said, as this was the first time the AFD was funding road repairs project, the decision was motivated by the desire to help Mozambique overcome the effects of the floods.
