Africa: Caf Cup in Last Eight Deciders

Accra — The battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the CAF Cup take place this weekend as 16 teams are in action to book a place in the last eight.

Titleholders, Jeunesse Sportive Kabilye of Algeria will lead a strong North African presence when they travel to Ethiopia for a return match against Electricity Corporation. JSK lead 2-0 from the first-leg played two weeks ago in Tizi-Ouzu.

Tunisian side, Etoile du Sahel, who were former CAF Cup winners will also troop to Nairobi to defend a similar margin against inexperienced African campaigners, Oserian Fastac of Kenya.

But it would not be a smooth patch for fellow Maghrebins, Wydad Athletic of Morocco and Algeria's CO Constantine. Wydad drew 1-1 with Senegalese side Ndiambour in Rabat and will need more than their weight of experience as former African champions to survive in the second-leg in Dakar. Constantine, meanwhile, will also be away in Abidjan to face one of the competition's early favourites Africa Sports Nationale, who lost the first-leg 1-0.

Although North African sides are expected to dominate, the field is equal balanced with at least an assurance that four sides south of the Sahara will play in the quarter-finals.

Angola's Atletico Aviacao will play against the only remaining Ghanaian representative in all three competitions, Obuasi Goldfields, who won a delayed first-leg tie 1-0 at home.

Ajax Cape Town of South Africa are potential favourites with their impressive results so far, drawing against Katsina United 2-2 in the first-leg and are now tipped to beat the Nigerians down in the Cape.

Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon will clash with Sanga Balendi of Congo Democratic Republic in Kinshasa and Ferroviaro Maputo of Mozambique look comfortable with their 2-0 home win against Green Mamba of Swaziland. The winner on aggregate of all eight ties will qualify for the quarter-finals.
