Mozambique: Delegation Discusses Maputo Corridor

Nelspruit, South Africa — A delegation from Mpumalanga's finance and economic affairs department left on a two-day visit to Mozambique on Thursday to assess developments along the Maputo Corridor initiative.

The R25 billion spatial development initiative seeks to link South Africa's industrial heartland of Gauteng with the deepwater port in Maputo.

The initiative is based on key infrastructure projects such as the R2 billion Maputo Corridor toll road, and upgraded rail and telecommunication links.

Department spokeswoman Christabel Hlatshwayo said the delegation would meet with Mozambique's investment promotion agency, CPI, to discuss promoting investment in the corridor and lessons that the province could learn from CPI's experiences.

They will also discuss the development of small, micro and medium enterprises along the corridor.

On Friday, the delegation will meet with the Maputo Port Company, which is responsible for developing the port.
