Africa: President of the World Bank Meets Finance Ministers of 9 War-Torn Countries

The President of the World Bank is scheduled to meet today with the Finance Ministers of nine African countries that have been affected by conflict.

James Wolfensohn will hold a two-day meeting in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam with finance ministers from Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic aof Congo (DRC), the Congo Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Loeonea and Uganda, the bank said in a statement.

The focus of the meeting is post-conflict rehabilitation and economic recovery, said the statement.

Wolfensohn began a three-nation tour of Africa on Friday in Kinshasa where he met Congolese President Joseph Kabila.

"A major theme of the visit will be the bank's re-engagement in the DRC and its support for other countries affected by conflict in the Great Lakes as well as its commitment to do more to support the transition from war to peace in Africa", the bank said.

The World Bank last month resumed assistance to DRC with a 450 million dollar loan after the country spent nearly a decade on donors' bad books.
