16 September 2000

Nigeria's Golden Eagles boosted Africa's hopes on Saturday when they powered to a 3-2 win against hosts Australia, while Cameroon drew 1-1 with the United States.

The defending Olympic champions triumphed in a game which was disrupted by fighting which followed a collision between Australian captain Brett Emerton and Julius Aghahowa. Both Emerton and Celestine Babayaro, the Nigerian captain, were shown the red card.

Nigeria took an initial lead of 2-0 after 24 minutes, with goals by Pius Ikedia and Aghahowa, but the Australians fought back to equalise. Then Nigeria's Victor Algali scored the winning goal after 64 minutes, effectively knocking Australia out of contention in the tournament.

Scoring in the Cameroon-U.S. game came from penalties - Cameroon's Patrick Mboma scored his team's only goal and the U.S. equalised after Cameroon's goalkeeper Daniel Bekono was penalised. Cameroon leads Group C with four points.
