Africa's Medal Tally Lags

25 September 2000

Africa's tally of Olympics medals is growing, but there's a long way to go to beat the total of 34 won in Atlanta in 1996.

Mozambican runner Maria Mutola won Africa's first gold medal on Monday in the 800m, and Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie followed up later on Monday evening, Sydney time, to take the gold in the 10000m race.

Other Africans to win medals on Monday were Paul Tergat of Kenya, who came in less than a tenth of a second (0.09s) after Gebrselassie to win silver, Assefa Mezgebu of Ethiopia, who won bronze in the 10,000m, Gete Wami of Ethiopia, who won a bronze in the women's 5000m, and Frantz Kruger of South Africa, who won bronze in the discus throw.

Africans have now won 11 medals and have hopes of further wins in the men's 1500m, men's 800m and the marathon. In 1996, they won medals in swimming, athletics and boxing. This year the number of swimming medals has declined and the boxers have run into difficulties. A number of the races in which Africans won medals at Atlanta have still to be run.

Nine of the 18 finishers of the 10000m race were Africans. Patrick Ivuti of Kenya took 4th place, John Korir of Kenya 5th place and Said Berioui of Morocco was 6th. Aloys Nizigama of Burundi was 9th, Girma Tolla of Ethiopia 11th and Samir Moussaoui of Algeria 16th.

Wami was followed in the 5000m by compatriot Ayelech Worku (4th), Lydia Cheromei of Kenya (6th), Worknesh Kidane, also of Ethiopia (7th), and Kenyans Rose and Vivian Cheruiyot (11th and 14th).
