Cote d'Ivoire: Celebrating Eid Al-Fitr in Côte d'Ivoire

22 December 2001

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire — Together with Muslims all over the world, followers of Islam in Côte d'Ivoire celebrated Eid Al-Fitr, on Sunday 16 December, to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Apart from feasting and praying, one of the annual rituals in Abidjan, during the Eid festivities, is a visit to the zoo. Finely dressed in freshly tailored outfits, children and adults throng the entrance to the zoo, which doubles up as a noisy public transport hub.

Mingling with bus drivers, prospective passengers and street vendors -- including ice-cream sellers doing brisk business on a hot and humid Sunday - some of those celebrating Eid posed for photographs taken by allAfrica.com's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton.

Smiling, demure, shy, cocksure - the whole range was proudly on display.

Bold, bright-coloured, patterned prints and plain fabrics glinted in the brilliant sunshine.

The hairstyle of choice for young girls was definitely plaits - in a variety of designs.

Most boys stuck to downcut shaven heads, with some fashionable exceptions.

After more than a year of political, social and religious tension in Côte d'Ivoire -- that has split the predominantly Muslim north and the mainly Christian and animist south - all those heading for Abidjan zoo had one thing in common. They were determined to have fun and a good day out while they celebrated Eid Al-Fitr in fitting style in Abidjan.
