Africa: China-Africa Relations

6 November 2006
opinion

At the recently concluded Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) in Beijing, 50 African heads of state attended, reaffirming the growing evidence that African countries are welcoming China as a major development partner. Some say that China's escalating engagement with and in Africa supports the continent's development efforts, aid needs and infrastructure growth. Others counter that China is only interested in Africa's resources and shows little regard for promoting human rights, particularly in some of its key trading partners, such as Sudan.

What do you think? Is China's growing engagement in Africa something to be worried about or welcomed? Who profits, and who suffers?
