Sierra Leone: Opposition Pulls Ahead in Election

12 September 2007

Early polling results announced by Sierra Leone's National Electoral Commission (NEC), give opposition candidate Ernest Koroma an early lead in the country's presidential run-off.

News agencies report that NEC statistics show that Koroma has received 64 percent of votes counted so far, whereas Vice-President Solomon Berewa has captured only 36 percent.

However, final results will not be expected for approximately 12 days. The BBC quoted a correspondent as saying that "although there is still a long way to go there was little to celebrate from these first results for the governing party."
