The AfDB Annual Meetings for this year are officially carbon neutral.

CO2 emissions of the annual meetings are emitted due to flights, local transport, paper and energy consumption as well as hotel accommodation.

As these emissions cannot be avoided, it is standard practice to offset them through the voluntary carbon market. The amount that NGO's receive by selling reduction certificates in the voluntary market is utilized to implement CO2 reduction projects within developing countries.

In essence, the ton of CO2 emitted due to the Annual Meetings will be reduce through a project which switches diesel-based power generation to renewable sources. Hence, the emissions are off set.

In this regard, AfDB has identified the leading NGO, Atmosfair, which has been pioneering the process of carbon offsets. Atmosfair is the worldwide only NGO that conducts projects in Africa by the rigorous CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) Gold standard.
