AfDB President in Morocco

Rabat, May 28, 2009 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Donald Kaberuka, is currently in Rabat, Morocco, on an official visit. On Thursday, May 28, 2009, he met with the AfDB Governor for Morocco and the Country's Finance Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar.

The minister presented an overview of the country's economy. He also commended AfDB-Morocco partnership. Mr. Kaberuka, for his part, recalled that AfDB assistance to the country had produced successful results, adding that he had asked the institution's various departments to seek new areas of intervention in the country. Mr. Kaberuka was also received by the management of the National Airports Authority (ONDA). His trip to Morocco has made it possible for the continent's premier development finance institution to gain a better understanding of the achievements of Bank-financed projects in the country's air transport sector. Discussions during his meetings underscored the fruitful and continuous collaboration between both parties.

The visit has also made it possible to present financing opportunities for future projects. After having financed the construction of the second runway of the Mohamed V airport in Casablanca as well as the National Air transport Security Centre for €78 million, the Bank Group has recently renewed its support to ONDA through a €240 million loan to upgrade infrastructure and strengthen security facilities in the Fès, Agadir, Marrakech and Rabat airports. Mr. Kaberuka is expected to deliver an opening speech at the forum organized by the high commissioner for plan at Skhirat and will be at Marrakech for a meeting on the financial crisis in Africa. The forum is being organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Moroccan Central Bank.
