AfDB Approves Emergency Humanitarian Aid Grant

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group on Tuesday, June 2, 2008, approved an emergency humanitarian aid grant of US$1 million to finance repair work on the Bas Mangoky irrigated perimeter levee in Madagascar.

The approval is in line with the Bank's emergency aid policy given that it is designed to finance infrastructure rehabilitation following floods in the region. The financing complements Malagasy government and OPEC Fund contributions estimated at US$1 million and US$0.5 million, respectively. The emergency aid grant will make it to possible to carry out work aimed at repairing an opening created by rising waters of the Mangoky River due to the passage of cyclone Fanele and to bring things to the pre-cyclone level.

The rehabilitated levee will help protect crops and human life against risks and damage caused by floods for some 28,000 people living within the perimeter. The perimeter is a huge rice production centre and it plays an important role in the Atsimo-Andrefana region's food security, in particular, and that of the country, in general
