Washington, DC — The Africa Society of The National Summit on Africa in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Senegal will host The Honorable Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs as the third lecturer for the 2009 Ambassador Andrew Young Lecture Series.
Friday, September 18, 2009
4:00-6:30 p.m
Academy for Educational Development Building, Academy Hall
1825 Connecticut Ave NW (Eighth Floor) Washington, D.C. 20009
In a lecture titled, “A United Africa Becomes a Global Player,” The Honorable Dr. Gadio will be speaking about the need for and significance of African unity. Since elected to the position of Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2002, Dr. Gadio has been a leading and outspoken supporter of the unification of Africa, which he has often cited as practical source of “resurgence” and “renaissance” on the continent.
Prior his current position as the Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gadio was the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Senegal from 2000-2002. He has also held positions at The World Bank, the School of International Training in Vermont, the United Nations, the European Commission, and the US-Africa Institute.
The concept of a united Africa is one that raises controversy within the continent and across the Diaspora. At a symposium on unifying Africa organized in July 2009 by the Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in partnership with the Foreign Ministry of Senegal, a diverse group of experts discussed the possibility of unifying the continent. Dr. Gadio used this platform to profess the need for a all obstacles to subsist in the creation of a unified Africa by 2017. While Dr. Gadio recognizes inherent challenges in achieving this goal, he persists in his vision of a “United States of Africa”.
Now in its seventh year, the Ambassador Andrew Young Lecture Series features distinguished speakers whose work has influenced and advanced awareness of U.S.-Africa relations. Named in honor of the former Chairman of The Africa Society Board, the Series was launched in 2002.
