Cote d'Ivoire: Several Dead in Clashes With Security Forces

19 February 2010

Security forces shot dead six people in Cote d'Ivoire during protests on Friday following the dissolution of the government and the electoral commission.

Fraternite Matin reported demonstrations and clashes in the towns of Gagnoa and Bouake. It said demonstrators burned tires and erected barricades. Security forces shot dead six people in Bouake and wounded at least 20 others, the newspaper said.

Agence France-Presse reported other clashes in the towns of Bingerville and Tiebissou.

The opposition accuses President Laurent Gbagbo of attempting to cling to power. He was elected in 2000 for a five-year term. Since then, elections have been postponed several times.

Tensions in Cote d'Ivoire erupted in civil war in 2002 and 2003.
