Abuja - Nigeria — The security situation in four member states will be among the dominant issues for discussion by ministers of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council during a two-day meeting which opens in Abuja on Monday, 7th June 2010.
The meeting of the Council, comprising Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Member States, will discuss the security situations in Guinea where elections are scheduled to be held this month and Niger where a 12-month transition timetable was recently released by the ruling military junta.
They will also discuss the situations in Guinea Bissau where renegade military officers in April 2010 detained the Prime Minister, who was later released, and the Chief of Defence Staff. A former Chief of the Navy was also released from the UN compound during the incident. Cote d'Ivoire's Minister of Foreign Affairs is expected to provide an update on the situation in the country to the ministers during the two-day meeting.
The ministers will also be briefed by the ECOWAS Commission on the elections in Togo, the forthcoming election in Guinea and the status of the implementation of the Convention of Small Arms and Light Weapons. Furthermore, they will discuss the security sector reform programmes planned for Guinea and Guinea Bissau and the outcome of the 27th meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS held in Cotonou.
The ministers meeting will be preceded by a two-day joint meeting of ECOWAS Ambassadors and the technical committee of Experts on Political Affairs, Peace and Security, which opens in Abuja on 4th June 2010.
