For all their success through the Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah years, a ticket to the World Cup finals somehow eluded the Black Stars until 2006.
But in their World Cup debut in Germany, they were the only African side to get out of the group stage, and they did it by beating the Czech Republic and the USA on their way to joining Italy in the round of 16.
With South Africa their second appearance at the finals, it may come as a surprise for many that it is not the Cameroonians, the Ivoriens or the Nigerians, but rather the underexposed Black Stars that are, with Egypt, the most successful team in Africa Cup of Nations history, with four titles to their credit - in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
On the junior levels, the Black Stars have enjoyed considerable success: they have won two FIFA U-17 World Cups, and they became the first African team to lift the FIFA U-20 World Cup when they beat Brazil on penalties in October 2009.
